Uses of Technical Mortars

Mortar, in construction, is material used to bond brick, stone, tile, or concrete blocks into a structure, as well as to repair concrete. It is a combination of a thick mixture of water, sand, and cement. The water is used to hydrate the cement and hold the mixture together. In order to form its bonding element, the water to cement ratio is usually higher in mortar than in concrete. When mixed, it is a much thicker substance than concrete, and with certain additives can make it one of the ideal waterproofing solutions in any building construction.

What is a Cementitious Mortar?

Cementitious mortar is composed of sand, a cement binder, water and possibly other additives. Upon setting, the cementitious mortar gets hard and seals the gaps between building components. Most of the time, cementitious mortar is used when constructing walls, fences and walkways. Additionally, this material is also useful when repairing these structures. Cement mortars can also repair pipes internally or provide protective coatings on the exterior of metallic materials. Anti-corrosion additives are sometimes added to the mortar.

Floor Screeds and Underlayment Mortars

Floor screeds are commonly cementitious materials made from a 1:3 or 1:4.5 ratio of cement to sharp sand. This can be applied onto either a solid concrete ground floor slab or onto a precast concrete floor unit. There are many floor screeds on the market and information about these can be obtained from many flooring companies in UAE.

Underlayment, on the other hand, is the final layer that lies just beneath the surface flooring and is selected to match the needs of the flooring material. In any flooring installation, except for ceramic tile, the success of the flooring depends mostly on the quality of its underlying support system.

Other Uses/Functions of mortar of mortars in general

  1. To bind masonry units like stone, bricks, and cement blocks.
  2. To give neat finishing to walls and concrete works.
  3. To fill joints and cracks in walls.
  4. For preparing building blocks.
  5. Serves as filler materials in cement works.
  6. In concrete, it is used to bind the particles of coarse aggregate into one solid mass.
  7. It is used for pointing joints of masonry or for plastering the surface of masonry to protect it from weather and to give the work a pleasing and smooth finish.
  8. To form a homogeneous mass of structure so as to resist all the loads coming over it without disintegration.
